On 2 May 2025 Rockstar delayed GTA 6 from 2025 to 26 May 2026, the first of two delays, apologising that it was later than fans expected. It moved again in November 2025, to 19 November 2026. Confirmed

What Rockstar said

The letter, signed by Rockstar Games and posted on Friday 2 May 2025, set the release for 26 May 2026. Rockstar said the interest in a new Grand Theft Auto had been truly humbling for the team. It said that with every game it has tried to exceed expectations, and that it needed the extra time to deliver the quality fans expect and deserve. It ended by promising more information soon. The post didn't give a reason beyond quality, and it didn't mention platforms, which stayed the same.

“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected.”

What changed

Before this, the only official timing was Trailer 1's 2025 window for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, from December 2023. This letter pushed the game out of 2025 and gave the first specific day: Tuesday 26 May 2026.

What happened next

Four days later, on 6 May 2025, Rockstar released Trailer 2. Six months after that, on 6 November 2025, it moved the game again, to Thursday 19 November 2026, saying the extra months would let it finish the game with the polish players expect. That is still the date, so 26 May 2026 is now history. Between the two letters, the game moved from an open 2025 window to a specific Thursday in November 2026.

Why we keep this story

Old dates keep circulating. If you see 26 May 2026 quoted as the release date, it comes from this letter and has been replaced. The current date and every region's unlock time are on our release time page. The full list of official announcements is on our news page, newest first.
