Will GTA 6 be on PS4, PS5 or Xbox One?

By · Updated · Every fact labelled and sourced

No. GTA 6 isn't coming to PS4 or Xbox One. PlayStation says it "will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles" and "will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles". The Xbox Store lists Xbox Series X|S only. It launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S.

Why last-gen consoles are out

Rockstar hasn't given a technical reason. What PlayStation does say is that GTA 6 uses the PS5's fast SSD for "near-instant load times", plus DualSense haptics, adaptive triggers and Tempest 3D Audio. [1] The game is also very large. Rockstar says the pre-load needs up to 212 GB depending on device. Confirmed [1]

PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S: what each store lists

The two store pages describe the game in different terms, so here they are side by side. A blank isn't a "no": it means that store's page doesn't mention it.

Built-in storage on each current console

These are the drive sizes Sony and Microsoft sell. Sony notes that part of the SSD is reserved for system software, so usable space is lower. [1]

Upgrading from a PS4 or Xbox One?

Any PS5 model or Xbox Series X|S will run it. The 512GB Series S has the smallest drive, so check free space first with the storage checker, and read the file size guide. Digital copies bought before launch also get the Vintage Vice City Pack. A PS4 copy of GTA 5 won't unlock anything in GTA 6, and there's no last-gen upgrade path because there's no last-gen version.

Boxed copies don't help an older console either. Rockstar says the physical version holds only a download code, with no disc, and needs an internet connection and a platform account to download. Confirmed [1] If you bought the wrong platform, see how to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order.
