Rockstar's Rob Nelson: the map is twice the size of GTA 5's

Screen Rant reported on 27 August 2026 that Rockstar's co-head of development Rob Nelson told content creators the GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. The figures came via a video from GTA creator TGG after a hands-off preview. Reported

What was reported
According to TGG, Rob Nelson said Leonida is "twice the size of GTA 5's map" and "three times the size of Red Dead 2's map". Screen Rant added that Vice City itself is about double the size of Los Santos, and that with its suburbs the area outpaces Los Santos and its surrounds by 11 times.
The numbers came from hands-off previews that Rockstar gave a small number of creators, on the same day An Extended Look premiered on Netflix.

Why we label it Reported
The quotes are second-hand: Rockstar said them to creators, TGG repeated them and Screen Rant reported them. Rockstar hasn't put an area in square miles or kilometres on its own site. Two months later, Rockstar's Aaron Garbut gave Edge magazine matching ratios, so the twice-GTA-5 figure now has two separate sources.
What it means for players
Ratios aren't areas, so any square-mile number you see online is a fan estimate. Rockstar says it will add an official printable map of Leonida to the GTA VI site as a free download on 19 November. Our map-size guide has every official ratio and its source.
