Rockstar confirms a network intrusion after GTA 6 footage leaks

By · Published · Updated

On 19 September 2022 Rockstar Games confirmed that an unauthorised third party had broken into its systems and taken confidential information, including early development footage of the next Grand Theft Auto. VGC reported the statement, which Rockstar posted on its social channels, and a matching one from Take-Two. Reported

What Rockstar said

Rockstar called it a network intrusion and said it didn't expect any disruption to its live game services or any long-term effect on development. It said it was "extremely disappointed" that details of its next game had been shared this way, and that work on it would continue as planned. It promised to introduce the game properly when it was ready.

Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, published its own statement the same day, also describing a network intrusion in which an unauthorised third party took confidential information. VGC added it to the story as an update.

“Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations.”

What happened next

Rockstar's next official word on the game came on 8 November 2023, when Sam Houser announced the first trailer for early December. Trailer 1 came out on 5 December 2023, a day earlier than planned. Both delays came later: first to 26 May 2026, then to 19 November 2026, the current release date on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
