GTA 6's weather system: moving storms, wind that rocks boats and turbulence that can damage planes
By Leo Vance · Published · Updated
Rockstar co-studio head Aaron Garbut has described GTA 6's dynamic weather in Edge's GTA 6 cover story, as reported by GamesRadar+ on 4 November 2026. Storms form in the distance and drift into town, wind is blocked by islands and buildings, boats rock depending on where you stand, and flying through severe weather causes turbulence and possibly light damage. What Rockstar said about the weather
Speaking to Edge magazine for its GTA 6 cover story, Aaron Garbut said the game's weather is "much more granular" than in other games, where he said it's generally "either rainy or sunny or whatever". GamesRadar+ reported the comments on 4 November 2026. According to the article, cloud systems move independently of each other, storms can form far off and gradually roll into town, and surfaces dry at different speeds once a storm has passed.
Wind is a big part of it. Garbut says wind moves through Vice City, making trees sway and waves form on the water. Islands and buildings block the wind as they would in real life, which changes how an anchored boat bobs near a shoreline. Your position inside a boat matters too: "Depending on where you are in your boat," Garbut says, "you'll skip over that stuff or get really rocked around by it."
“Everything comes down to these granular levels”
Planes, helicopters and people on the street
Flying a plane or helicopter in a storm is risky. GamesRadar+ reports that severe weather causes turbulence and can cause light damage if you stay in the storm too long. Leonida's residents also react: people seek shelter when severe weather passes through.
GamesRadar+ also mentions the idea of being high in the air as a hurricane circles around you. Rockstar hasn't published a list of weather types, so we don't list any beyond what the article describes.
Context and what's next
This is the second detail from Edge's GTA 6 cover story we've covered, after Rockstar's comments on the size of Leonida's landmass. It comes from a magazine interview rather than a Newswire post, so we label it Reported. GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and digital pre-loading opens on 10 November. We'll check the weather claims in-game after launch and update this story if anything differs.
