What IGN reported
Virginia Glaze's IGN article, updated on 5 November 2026, cites data compiled by Sensor Tower and says GTA 6 has already taken in more than $750 million in pre-orders across both PlayStation 5 and Xbox. The game is still two weeks from its 19 November 2026 launch. IGN, citing that same dataset, wrote that Rockstar had already made three-quarters of the way to a billion dollars in pre-orders alone. The outlet presents the totals as estimates, not as a publisher earnings release.
IGN then gives a dated snapshot. As of 3 November, it wrote that an estimated 7.71 million units had been sold, translating to $751 million. IGN also described the console breakdown as revenue: a roughly 74 percent to 26 percent split in favour of PlayStation, or about $559 million on PlayStation and $192 million on Xbox. We are repeating those Sensor Tower numbers as IGN printed them. We have not independently audited Sensor Tower's model, and Rockstar and Take-Two have not posted matching official pre-order totals.
“As of November 3, an estimated 7.71 million units have been sold, translating to a whopping $751 million in profits.”
How IGN explained the figures
IGN highlighted that PlayStation pre-orders far outnumber Xbox ones in Sensor Tower's split, which is where the $559 million and $192 million figures come from. For context, IGN compared the estimate with Grand Theft Auto V's launch, writing that GTA 5 made $800 million in its first 24 hours and reached $1 billion in three days. IGN said it is possible GTA 6 could pass that record once 19 November arrives, but presented that only as speculation tied to the pre-order estimate.
IGN also suggested the large dollar total may reflect fans buying the $100 Ultimate Edition rather than the standard version. It pointed to an August interview in which Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick told CNBC that this pattern was "a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are preordering now." IGN noted the Standard Edition at $80 and quoted Zelnick telling IGN that the price reflected the game's value and was a "bargain." Those edition prices and remarks appear here as IGN reported them, not as a new official price list from Rockstar.
Why this is Reported, and what happens next
We label this story Reported because the numbers come from Sensor Tower via IGN, not from a Rockstar Newswire post or a Take-Two statement that states a pre-order total. Store-intelligence estimates can differ from the units and revenue a publisher later reports. Until Rockstar or Take-Two publishes its own figure, 7.71 million units and $751 million remain an estimate as of 3 November.
Grand Theft Auto VI still launches on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Digital pre-loading, per Rockstar's Newswire, starts on 10 November: midnight local time on PS5 and 12am GMT worldwide on Xbox.
