What the stores say
PlayStation lists 1 player and offline play enabled. Confirmed [1] Xbox lists it as single player. Confirmed [1] JB Hi-Fi and EB Games in Australia print the same sentence: "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience." Confirmed [1] [2] [3]
Two protagonists is not two players
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are both playable. Edge says you can switch between them whenever the narrative allows, as you could between Franklin, Michael and Trevor in GTA 5. Reported [1] During one preview chase, Nelson fled on a motorcycle with Lucia as the passenger and noted that you can hand the getaway to the other character while you shoot from the back. He joked that the passenger is "AI" of "the good, old-fashioned sort". [1]
That is still one player. No split-screen, couch co-op or online co-op mode has been announced. Unknown if anything like that arrives after launch.
Playing with friends
At launch you cannot invite a friend into the story. Friends will need their own copy, on a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, and will play their own single-player campaign. Whether a later GTA 6 Online lets you team up is a separate, unanswered question: see crossplay and online at launch.
PlayStation does say that if you share a PS5, you can turn on Console Sharing and Offline Play so other accounts on that console can play a game you bought. That is account sharing on one machine, not two-player story co-op. [1]
