GTA 6's weather is much more granular than GTA 5's presets, Rockstar's Aaron Garbut told Edge. Storms can form in the distance and drift into town, wind is shaped by islands and buildings, boats rock depending on where you are, and flying through severe weather can buffet an aircraft or even cause light damage.

Garbut is a Rockstar co-studio head and head of development. He said this in Edge issue 430, whose cover feature GamesRadar+ published in full on 29 October 2026. We opened that feature on 6 November 2026 (AEDT). Reported [1]
How it differs from GTA 5
Garbut told Edge that GTA 5's weather has preset conditions: sunny, rainy, overcast. "Generally speaking, it's either rainy or sunny or whatever." GTA 6, he said, is "much more granular." Cloud systems move independently, shaped by wind, humidity, fog, time of day and season. [1]
A player standing in bright sunshine may see a storm forming in the distance: dark clouds, lightning, the haze of falling rain. Drive toward it and the change is gradual. Roads become wet; buildings drip after the storm has passed; surfaces dry at different rates. [1]
Wind, water and aircraft
Those systems interact with the rest of the world. Wind affects trees, clouds and waves. Islands and buildings can shelter stretches of water, changing how boats move through bays and along shorelines. "Depending on where you are in your boat," Garbut said, "you'll skip over that stuff or get really rocked around by it." [1]
Fly a plane or helicopter through a storm and the weather can buffet the aircraft. Stay inside severe conditions and it may even sustain light damage. Pedestrians respond too, seeking shelter as the weather deteriorates. "Everything comes down to these granular levels," Garbut said, "and then it just interacts." [1]

- How often severe storms occur, or whether they can kill you outright — Unknown.
- Console-specific differences in the weather simulation — Unknown.
This is the same Edge session that described Criminal Profile and Leonida's scale. Our news write-up of the weather quotes is GTA 6 weather: storms, wind and turbulence. Map context sits on map size and the Leonida map.

Can GTA 6 weather damage your plane?
Garbut told Edge that flying through a storm can buffet an aircraft, and remaining in severe conditions may cause light damage.
Does weather affect boats in GTA 6?
Yes. Garbut said islands and buildings can shelter water, and that a boat may skip over chop or get 'really rocked around' depending on where you are.
